Dear Elmonica Families,
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!
This newsletter was emailed to all parents and guardians on Friday, August 16, who entered an email address for school communication. If you did not receive this letter via email and would like to receive school email communication, please update your email settings in your ParentVue account or call the school office.
We are very pleased to continue our third year as an authorized IB World School. The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme is a high-quality, challenging instructional framework aimed to create knowledgeable inquirers who take action in order to create a better and more peaceful world. Follow this link to learn more about an IB education.
It seemed like a very short summer and we are excited and ready to begin. I certainly hope you have had the opportunity to play and have fun with family and friends for the last several weeks. As a mother with one away at college and two high schoolers, I had a quiet summer with my kids at school, at work, playing Fortnight, or out and about with friends. We did manage a few family hikes and kayaking together.
We did not have any significant changes or updates to the school building and are still expecting the front portable buildings to be relocated. However, we did have some significant staff changes with several teachers relocating to new schools and other staff seeking out different teaching opportunities.
We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning.
Kalay McNamee & Karla Ramirez

Welcome New Staff Members
Marissa completed her student teaching at Elmonica last spring in Kindergarten and was just hired as our newest first grade teacher. Marrisa is now a newlywed - married on August 16! She is looking forward to meeting her students and beginning her career as an elementary teacher.
Alison is an experienced educator having taught 2nd-5th grades in Colorado and in the Beaverton School District. Alison is a self-proclaimed “dog-mama” of three and recently settled into a new home with her husband. Alison is very excited to start teaching 2nd grade at Elmonica and can’t wait for the year to begin.
Stephanie recently graduated from PSU's Inclusive Elementary Educator Program with a masters in Special Education and General Education license. Her student teaching at Raleigh Hills K-8 for the past 2 years, has encouraged her to continue teaching in the BSD community. Stephanie feels honored and excited to begin working with Elmonica staff and students.
Last year, Katie was teaching PE at Ash Creek Elementary School in Monmouth. Katie, her husband, and their cat Ferguson just moved to Beaverton. She cannot wait to meet the rest of the Elmonica staff and students.
Please welcome Karl Gustafson as our new music teacher. Karl retired in 2014, but missed the classroom so much he spent the 2016-17 school year teaching in Washington. He taught remedial reading half-time at Errol Hassell for the last two years and is thrilled to be returning to teaching elementary music full-time at Elmonica. Karl brings a wide variety of musical experiences both in the classroom k-12 and as a professional musician. We are very fortunate to have Karl join Elmonica!
Angie began working for the Beaverton School District this month and is pleased with her new position as our evening custodian. She has been providing cleaning services in the medical field and describes herself as obsessive about cleaning. Angie is looking forward to getting to know the students and staff at Elmonica and to keeping our building beautiful.
Class assignments Grades 1-5 will be emailed by classroom teachers on Monday, August 26.
Kindergarten assignments will be finalized after most of the Kindergarten assessments are completed. Kindergarten teachers will email assignments by 4:00pm, Friday, September 6.
Many hours have gone into these placement decisions. While attending to individual needs, relationships, and the overall balance of classes across the school, the staff has thought carefully about each child. All Elmonica staff members are committed to providing challenge and success to all children.
Kindergarten parents/guardians - Please schedule an assessment appointment for September 3rd or 4th through this link or call the school office to create your appointment.
All parents/guardians should create a ParentVue account to access attendance, calendars, emergency contacts, report cards, and school information. Please create your ParentVue account here.
Enrollment verification is all online. Please take the opportunity to update important family information, give technology permissions, and acknowledge reading important school and District information. Follow this link to verify your child(rens) enrollment. If you have any difficulties, please contact the school office.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and lunch are served beginning the first day of school and all students receive lunch regardless of account balance or free and reduced lunch benefit status. Students may arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria at 8:05.
If you need to make a deposit into your child’s account, please send your child with a check made out to Elmonica Café for deposit into their breakfast/lunch account. Put the check in an envelope with your child’s name on it and place it in the drop box inside the cafeteria. Returning students will have the same lunch PIN (personal identification number) as last year and new students will be assigned a PIN upon enrollment. (The PIN is also your child’s student ID and library ID.) Once you have your child’s student ID number, you can create an account to make automatic deposits for breakfast and lunch using the online payment service School Cafe'.
Monthly menus, meal information and prices can be found on the BSD Nutrition Services webpage . Information for the Meal Benefits Program (free or reduced lunch prices) is also available on the NS webpage.
Newsletters: Elmonica Family News, PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) Newsletter & Beaverton School District News
In an effort to reduce the amount of paper used for communication, most of the information shared by the school, the PTO, and the District through email and our websites.
The newsletters, Elmonica Family News and Elmonica PTO Newsletter, are emailed on Fridays. Newsletter emails will include links to school and PTO information, fliers, community fliers, and other helpful resources and information. The school newsletter is archived on the Elmonica school website.
Our school has a 24-hour school Attendance Line. If your child is absent from school for any reason, please call 503-356-2081. Please refrain from calling the school office. The Attendance Line is checked multiple times each day, so please do not call the main office to report an absence. Please report an absence with your child's student ID number and reason for absence.
Please volunteer at Elmonica! There are many activities and programs that you can support by volunteering. If you are interested in helping out, please respond to PTO requests for help. A background check is required for all volunteers for all Beaverton schools. Please visit the District website and click on Parent/Guardian. It can take several weeks to get on the approved volunteer list at the beginning of the year, so please complete the background check as soon as possible. Siblings and other children are not permitted to accompany parents/guardians while volunteering per District policy.
Beaverton School District Student/Family Handbook and Elmonica Family Handbook
The District expects families to read the BSD Student & Family Handbook and the Elmonica Family Handbook. Please read the handbooks thoroughly so you and your child understand BSD and Elmonica expectations. Policies and procedures in the handbooks are developed to enhance opportunities for learning, or to keep our school a safe place for all students and staff. The District requires each family to acknowledge that they have read and discussed the Student/Family Handbook with their children during enrollment or verification process.
Medications At School
All medications taken at school must be delivered to the school office, in its original container, and a permission form must be completed by a parent or guardian.
Regular Arrival Routine
School begins every day at 8:30am and ends at 3:05pm each day. For the safety of your children, students are not allowed to arrive before supervision is provided at 8:05am. Students are late if they are not in their classroom by 8:30. Please arrive by 8:25. There is no early release this year.
Bus Route Information
Using your child's student ID number, you may look up the specific route and bus stop information by visiting the Transportation webpage. The Transportation Department will send an email or send an autodial phone call to families with bus stop information before school begins.
Students are expected to be at their bus at least five minutes early until our drivers learn their routes. Don’t worry if the bus is late for pick-up and drop-off during the first few weeks of school. Please note, bus drivers do not wait for an adult to be present at the afternoon bus stop.
Dismissal Procedures and Safety
Our school has a very busy parking lot. To reduce vehicular traffic, I strongly encourage families to send your child on the school bus, if provided, or walk to and from school. Students who walk to school or ride bikes are asked to be extremely cautious. It is important for students to remember to watch the crossing guard at the crosswalk and obey the stop signs. These dismissal procedures maximize pedestrian, bicycle and automobile safety and reduce traffic congestion at this busy time of day.
students dismissed at exterior classroom doors
students who walk home without an adult
students who walk home with a parent who meets them at their classroom door
Parked parents walking to dismissal area
students who drive home with a parent who has parked their vehicle in a designated parking spot & walked to a classroom door to pick up a child
students board busses at front entrance
students brought to official daycare vehicles at front island
daycare vehicles must have an Elmonica Daycare Pick-up Placard (available in office)
students delivered to parents in vehicles in the bus lane in front of the cafeteria
The Elmonica parking lot will be closed to parent traffic from 2:45 (or when all parking spots are filled, whichever occurs first) to 3:20.
Students being picked up by adults in vehicles will wait in the cafeteria until after buses have departed. Students will not be released from the cafeteria to parents outside of vehicles.
After approximately 3:20, the bus lane will be opened for vehicle pick-up. Vehicles will pull forward and staff will release students individually to authorized adults. Adults must remain in their vehicle. Adults picking up students must obtain an Elmonica Vehicle Pick-up Placard. Placards can be obtained at the Elmonica front office or at our Back to School Family Picnic.
Parents/Guardians who need to pick up a student for an appointment at the end of the day may park in designated parking spaces prior to 2:45 or allot time to park in the neighborhood and walk in to sign out their student.
Elmonica students have an opportunity to use the Virginia Garcia Medical Center's dental sealant program. Applications linked here in Spanish and English . HIPPA acknowledgment in English and Spanish.
Our theme this year is Start With Hello. Start With Hello teaches students the skills they need to reach out to and include those who may be dealing with chronic social isolation and to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their school. Social isolation is the overwhelming feeling of being left out, lonely and treated like you are invisible. Young people who are isolated can become victims of bullying, violence and/or depression. As a result, many further pull away from society, struggle with learning and social development and/or choose to hurt themselves or others
Start with Hello is an inspired no-cost, easy-to-implement, and life-saving program that can be delivered in classes, assemblies and via student ambassadors. Our school counselors will be leading the program implementation. For more information, please visit https://www.sandyhookpromise.org/prevention_programs.
At Elmonica we are intentionally creating a school culture of kindness and inclusiveness. In addition to the Start With Hello program, we will continue learning to move us forward in achieving our school vision of “appreciating the unique qualities of each person, creating empathy, compassion, and international-mindedness.”
